The Special Olympics movement hosts its own National and World Games just like the International Olympics and the Paralympics.  And like any other sporting event of this scale, Special Olympics athletes dedicate themselves to countless hours and even years of training to qualify for these life-changing events.

Help Team Virginia win more than medals!

Kirsten Stone returned from the 2009 World Winter Games with much more than the medals she won on the ice.  She came back a new person ready for new challenges. After spending 10 days at the World Games event, Kirsten knew she was ready to take some very important steps off the playing field.  In the past year, she has begun living independently in her own apartment, joined a social running club and began training as a Special Olympics Virginia Global Messenger. As a Global Messenger, Kirsten is spreading the message of Special Olympics and our mission to inspire more respect, inclusion and unity in our shared communities.

With July’s National Games just around the corner in Nebraska and World Games in Athens, Greece in mid-2011, many Special Olympics athletes like Kirsten are counting on the continued generosity of our sponsors and donors who make Team Virginia’s participation at National and World level competitions possible.
